Escaping Routine: Reasons for and How to Travel

Escaping Routine - Reasons for and How to Travel

Travel is an experience that offers more than just a break from or escaping routine; it brings new perspectives, helps us grow, and creates lasting memories. People are drawn to it for various reasons, from adventure to relaxation.

Whether you’re considering your first big trip or planning yet another adventure, understanding the “why” and “how” of travel can enhance your experience.

Why We Travel:

1. Broadening Our Perspectives

One of the most powerful reasons for travel is the opportunity to see the world from a different perspective. Visiting a new country, city, or even a small rural town allows us to see how others live, opening our eyes to different cultures, values, and ways of life.  I find this very true.  I have learned a lot from my travels.

2. Escaping Routine and Finding Peace

Our day-to-day lives can become monotonous, leading to burnout. Travel provides a way to break free from the usual schedule and find a change of scenery, which can be refreshing for both the mind and body. Sometimes, just a weekend getaway or a trip to a peaceful place, like a national park, can help us reset and find balance.

3. Creating Memories

Travel is often more enjoyable with loved ones. Going on trips with friends, family, or partners can strengthen relationships by creating shared memories and experiences. From road trips and beach outings to exotic city tours, these moments can become stories to share and remember for a lifetime.

4. Finding Adventure and Discovering New Things

For those seeking excitement, travel offers endless opportunities. Exploring ancient ruins, hiking, walking along a new beach or even just wandering through unfamiliar streets can be thrilling. Adventure travel pushes us out of our comfort zones and brings a sense of accomplishment.

This is definitely one of the main reasons I travel.  I love to drive new roads, explore state and national parks.  Learning about the history of a place and stopping at history sites is something I enjoy on a roadtrip.

I love to explore and see new places but not into the extreme adventure stuff.  I know a lot of people think vanlife is quite extreme.  Travelling in my van for the past several years has now become a lifestyle that I totally enjoy.

5. Personal Growth and Self-Discovery

Traveling solo or exploring new terrains can often lead to self-discovery. Facing challenges, meeting new people, and adapting to different cultures helps build resilience. Many people return from trips with a better understanding of themselves and newfound confidence.

How to Travel: Tips for a Memorable and Smooth Journey

1. Plan Ahead, but Stay Flexible

Planning is essential for a successful trip. Researching destinations, booking accommodations, and creating an itinerary can save time and reduce stress. However, it’s equally important to stay flexible. Some of the best travel experiences are spontaneous, so leave room for unexpected adventures.

I usually have a large plan of where I will travel when in my van, but usually decide everyday where I will go to the next day.  I like the sponetanity of this life style. When I have travelled overseas I have made more specfic plans as I am not travelling in my home.

2. Set a Budget and Stick to It

Traveling can be expensive, so it’s important to set a realistic budget. Break it down into categories such as transportation, accommodation, food, and activities.

Vanlife can have different challenges than traveling to a specific place for a week or two.  Gas and campgrounds can be large expenses so budgeting these items are important.

There are countless budget-friendly travel tips, like using public transportation, opting for homestays or hostels, and eating like a local to save money while still experiencing the culture.

3. Pack Smartly and Lightly

Packing light can make travel much easier. Bring only what you need, focusing on versatile clothing and essential items. Keep valuable items like your passport, phone, and wallet secure, and bring only the necessities.

4. Embrace Local Cultures and Customs

Respecting and embracing the local culture enriches your experience and fosters positive connections with locals. Learn a few basic phrases in the local language, try native dishes, and be mindful of cultural norms and customs. This shows respect and can make your travels smoother and more enjoyable.

5. Stay Safe and Be Aware

Safety should always be a priority. Research the safety of your destination and avoid risky areas or situations. It’s wise to have copies of important documents, keep emergency contacts handy, and purchase travel insurance for added peace of mind.

6. Document Your Journey but Live in the Moment

Photos and videos are great for capturing memories and a great way to review your trip when you feel like escaping routine when back home.  It’s also essential to enjoy the present moment. Set aside the phone or camera occasionally and just experience the sights, sounds, and smells around you.

The Power of Travel for Escaping Routine

Travel has a way of expanding horizons, enriching lives, and filling us with gratitude. It brings people together and can inspire creativity. So, whether it’s a cross-country road trip or a faraway escape, embrace the journey and all it has to offer. Happy travels!
