A New Chapter: Van Life to Farmhouse Living 🌲

For the next eight months, my van will be parked, and I’ll be calling a farmhouse in Northern Alberta home. Life on the road has given me so many adventures. This winter I’ll be trading in long drives and desert sunsets for snow-covered fields, frosted trees, and the stillness of rural living.

From Van Life to Farmhouse in Northern Alberta

This is the house where I grew up and lived until I moved out after graduating from high school. My 6 siblings and I now own the 20 acre farmsite together.

Over the last 4 years, since I started my van life I have spent a few months each summer here. It has been 45 years since I spent a full winter in Northern Alberta.  It will definitely be an adventure.

My decision to spend the winter at the farmhouse is 3 fold:

First my older brother retired this spring, he was living here part time.  The house would have been empty this winter. We will have to decide how to handle the house during the cold winter months and this will be a transition year for us to decide.

Second, with the US exchange rate and political climate I decided not to go back to the US this winter. Living in a van in the winter in Canada is doable for some, but not my idea of a good time.  I lived stealth in Vancouver for a year before I started traveling south.  The grey skies, cold, damp, and condensation was not a lot of fun.  I wanted a little more comfort and the empty farmhouse beckoned.

Third, I decided I wanted to explore more of Canada and summer is a better time to do this.  I will be planning a cross country roadtrip next year.

Bonus reason – I hope to save money this winter! Things are expenssive in the north, so I will have to let you know how this goes.

It’s a big shift — no wheels under me, no campgrounds or BLM land — just one cozy farmhouse and a whole lot of Northern Alberta winter. I’m curious to see what this season will teach me about slowing down, living simply, and finding adventure in one place.

Over the next while, I’ll be sharing glimpses of farmhouse life: the beauty of prairie winters, cozy corners inside, the challenges (and joys!) of rural living, and reflections on what it feels like to pause van life for a season.

This isn’t a break from my journey — it’s just another part of it. A different kind of adventure. 💙
